How hard is it to learn and play electric guitar?

any instrument is ‘hard’ unless you give it dedication
i taught myself and I’m not half bad
yes it best to learn with a acoustic guitar first
You have to start out with basic notes then go to the harder ones. It took me about a year to get the hang of it. Stage tricks are the last thing you need to learn.
being that im a musician, but not a guitar player, i offer you this advice:

loll. Then you should be able to teach yourself but you might want to take a month of lessons just for the basics and scales then just go on by yourself after that. Ive made it far being a musician.
It’s not too hard but you need to give it the due dedication. I taught myself and I find that I’m improving all the time
You might want to check Apple’s new version of Garage Band in iLife ‘09 (if you have a Mac), it has a nifty guitar training tool which you should be able to use quite effectively.
Its easier to finger an electric guitar.
But if you want to play those fast solo like Steve Vai, then of course that is still a long way to go.
