Is learning to play an electric guitar hard?

Posted by admin on 12th August 2010 in Electric Guitar Tips

I’m planning on getting an electric guitar really soon (I have no experience at all, and have never actually touched an electric guitar) but I really want to learn some of my favorite songs that use electric guitar songs (like Digital Love and Aerodynamic both by Daft Punk) and I was wondering if it was truly that hard.
I’m planning on teaching myself, and to spend about an hour everyday practicing?

Well, firstly, good luck with it all. Playing the electric guitar, at first anyway, will make your back, neck, arms, head and hands hurt, especially the tips of your fingers as they toughen up enough to deal with steel strings. After that, you need to learn how to recognise when your guitar is in tune or not. Use an online tuner…just google it. Don’t forget you will need a half decent amplifier too…ebay would be a good place to start. In a bedroom, 15 Watts is quite loud so, do not go crazy and get a 200 watt one. If you intend teaching yourself then there are many lessons for beginners you can watch on youtube. Then, it’s really very simple…practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice. 10000 hours should get you to a reasonable standard.

Personal point: If you are really serious about learning to play the guitar, ditch the electric one and study the classical guitar. Sure, you will not sound like Daft Punk but, you will make the most beautiful instrument ever created make the most beautiful sound possible.

    Good luck.

relatively easy to learn – almost impossible to master..if you’re really dedicated, you should be able to learn it well enough to play those tunes semi-well within a year.

Taking lessons will get you started faster. The guitar is a very accessible instrument. You will find that most of the songs you like only have a few chords in them. You could be jamming along with them in 2 months tops. You want a teacher that will ask you what you would like to learn. Getting you to play along with a song you like grabs your interest right away. The guitar theory is taught along with it. Remember, have fun! Hope this helps

It all depends on you. If you got what it takes to put in an hour every day for weeks or months on end you’ll be able to play those Daft Punk songs with ease. I suggest starting by learning songs, that’s how I did it. It’s easier to practice something as cool as a cover song as apposed to as mundane as a scale. Lots of guitarists start by learning how to read guitar tab and jumping right into some simple songs. Good places for guitar tab are http://www.ultimate-guitar.com and http://www.fuzzymonkeytabs.com

But learning technique is important too, once you know you’re going to be playing guitar for a long time, you should start learning proper ways of playing. Good luck man, playing guitar is awesome, it feels good and it entertains people.
