It took me ten years to sing and play at the same time without screwing it up. I suggest you put the lyrics down on paper, double space them and place the chord changes over the word where the change takes place.
Boston by Augustana is a good song to get you practicing, it’s nice and slow and there’s enough chord changes to let you get used to the concept. Here’s a progression you can use: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/a/augustana/boston_acoustic_crd.htm
But practice practice practice, and listen to covers on YouTube, while watching them play. Sometimes that can give you ideas on how to make the chord changes and strum patterns while singing.
I hope this helps and thank you for asking your question.
I had this problem when I first learned to play guitar. My advice is to learn the song on the guitar and once you learn, sing at the sametime. Also try not to become choppy when strumming and don’t get ahead of yourself. Just relax.
I am a country music singer/songwriter and I have recently taken up guitar. In my opinion the best way to train yourself to sing while playing is to turn off the music. Go to freemetronome.com unless you already have a metronome and sit down with just you, your guitar and the tabs. Play to the metronome without the acconmpaniment of a track and it will better train your coordination. Mindset is important too. You have to believe that you are able and overcome the doubt. Keep your superstar stage mindset every time you play and remember this philosophy. Perform like they came just to see YOU …Kicker
actually its all about co-ordination,which isn’t the same in everyone. I’ve been playing for 3 months now nd still cant do it. But one friend of mine has taken up on it just 2 months into his guitar learning. Now he jst has to practice the song for one day,and after that he can sing and play at the same time. I t comes naturally, but of course with practice. Its just that,u and i need more practice.
