Will it be hard to learn electric guitar and drums at the same time?
Posted by admin on 29th August 2010 in Electric Guitar Tips
I’ve always wanted to play the electric guitar and the drumset. Recently my friend and I have decided to go look around for guitars cause she wants to learn the electric guitar too… Now that she’s looking to buy a guitar, I want to play drums with her so we wont be just two guitars…
Should I go one before the other? Is it alright to try to learn both at the same time?

It’s fine to learn both at the same time but you will probably find you start to get further ahead on one or the other and the other instrument may get left behind.
I started learning guitar and bass at the same time, I made more progress on guitar as I enjoyed it more and now I am a good guitarist but just an average bass player.
But anyway, go for it, learn both together, have fun
Learning two drastically different instruments at the same time will typically end up with one of two results:
a) One instrument will get more attention (as mentioned above) and so the other will fall behind. This goes with a simple principle: you can’t play two instruments at once.
b) You will grow in skill with both instruments, but you won’t grow much with either. Kind of the “jack of all trades, master of none” idea. Splitting attention may be more problematic than helpful because of the split attention.
It is very possible to learn multiple instruments. Personally, I play the bass, electric/acoustic guitar and drums. But it’s best to START with one, which for the moment will be your primary instrument. Keep in mind practicing: you will be much more likely to practice, and get more out of practice, playing an electric guitar by yourself than drums. I know several people that have tried starting on drums, but have given up on them because practicing them just simply isn’t what they were hoping it would be.
