    The best way is to get a good teacher. Call your local school department and ask the music department head for a refferal. He will probably know the best teacher in your area.

    I am also currently learning how to play guitar. It is actually WAY harder than you will ever want it to be. I also tried tabs, you will seriously try for weeks and your fingers will hurt- then you will try chords and AH. The thing i really recommend is getting some lessons, Buy a guitar book.. they also have dvd’s that help ALOT. tabs are cool for songs you wanna know how to play- but in the long run you will need to learn how to play chords, and those are pretty hard to learn all by yourself.

    Have you checked into music lessons, I know that you said forget about a teacher…..but to me this is the best way to go if you want to become a good musician. If it’s the cost not all music stores are expensive, some have group lessons, and you could call and get prices, not all are that bad, I know one that teaches for $10.00 for a half hour……Some students who don’t have their degrees yet teach for a very minimal, they usually post on their college bulletin board, call your local college. If none of this works for you why not try the Internet, they have tutors, DVDs, Cd’s, videos etc. Most do cost though, I don’t really care for the free sites, their not very complete….there are a few that aren’t too bad, and that’s ;
    http://www.jamplay.com/ (they have I think six free lessons)

    Learn a little of everything first. Then concentrate on chordds. The secretis to practice them in one position. Example, 3rd fret G or 5th fret A.
    Practicel all major , minor , 7th, maj7, min 7 in one position only.
    Then do the same for 5th fret D. After that, it is east to play the other keys since you just simply move up for down to change keys.

    After, you can solo in these chord positions much easier since you will know where they are onthe findgerboard.

    i learned tabs before i learned chords and i turned out fine

    just learn simple tab songs first if you want and once you get the concept of that everything else will come soon enough
