Its good that you have a chord book
I taught myself guitar after learning piano and trumpet from private teachers. To start what I did was find some tabs and a chord book, took my time and just strumed through a whole bunch or songs until I got a feel for what I was doing. The most common chords are gonna be G, C, D, D minor, E, E minor, and F. Then go about learning blues (minor seven) chords and blues patterns since thats what a lot of rock is based on. Im not much of a rocker but some pretty simple tunes are Should I Stay or Should I go (the clash) and Wish You Were Here (pink Floyd) they arnt new but they give you a pretty good feel for the guitar its self.
if you know how to read tabs, thats the best place to start.
do a search for guitartpro or powertab.
these are programs that play the tabs and highlight the notes.
you can also slow down the riffs to learning speed, then gradually bring it faster. that is where i learned most of my soloing…
Blues chord progressions are really easy. they mostly consist of two or three strings in which at least one of them is open. Playing blues chords helps to learn rythm.
double and triple stops sound really good with distortion of you can make a good melody. plus they’re easy and you can do just about anything-they’re like power chords, they just dont sound as complete.
practicing scales helps when single note picking.
i’m not sure what type of songs ur wanting to learn but i have a tip that u may have even heard 4 bass. focus on scales. i no u hv probably heard this over and over and over again but trust me its sound advice. this will help u not only speed up. but it will also help if you ever want to write a solo.
for me as a expert at the guitar/bass i would suggest you stay on one instrument first until you get the hang of it. then once you do, then try the guitar. an easy cord to play is Metallica nothing else matters.
