learning the electric guitar on my own?

Posted by admin on 6th September 2010 in Electric Guitar Tips

i bought an electric guitar, it sounds great and i’m learning by tabs, i can play a few songs already i’m just worried that i won’t learn the “right way” to play. i don’t have a teacher, i was just wondering, with a lot of practice and hard work, is it possible to become a really good guitarist?

yea my dad is really good and when he started out he didn’t use music to learn h’ed learn it by ear and he did that to Jimi Hendrix

of course, but you should also learn some guitar theory, buy some books on the subject. Note reading is easier than than tabs, I think.

Absolutely! Don’t give up. There are many, many well-know guitarists that started out as self-taught. Especially the classic rock gods. Alot of them would eventually go on to have lessons, learn musical theory and such. Just keep up the good work, practice, practice, practice! You are the only one who can set yourt limit of success.

There isn’t really any “right way” to play the guitar. But yes, with practice and work, and experimentation with different techniques, you can become skilled. I taught myself to play the bass guitar, I’ve only been playing for a little over a year and I can already use three different playing methods, play at high speeds, and play some guitar parts, so a teacher isn’t required to learn. Keep at it though, and I’m sure that if you want it enough, you’ll be great at guitar.

    hendrix taught himself.
but there’s lots on the net about how to play and about guitar theory so check it out

either way, there’s no really “wrong way”, just easier ways to do things, and cool things to figure out how to do. keep it up

Yes it is possible. Look at people like Jimi Hendrix. He taught himself, but for most people, its good to have some instruction. Trust me, i know a lot of people who I try to jam with who made the mistake of not getting lessons. Its no fun playing with another person who has bad technique, and has no skills in song writing and things like that. Playing songs with all downstrokes never sounds good.

You dont have to take lessons for the rest of your life, but definitely get a teacher. Once you create bad habits for yourself, its really hard to break them. Your better off learning things the right way from the start.

If your serious about guitar, get some instruction. But if your just plainning on messing around and learning a song or two, its up to you.
