It depends on what your performing.. For faster Closer notes i use my wrist but for slower songs (country sorta in a way) I would use my arm and let your wrist be limb and fall through with it

what ever it takes to make sound come out of your amp

In a standard strum, proper form is to use your arm. Of course, as you play increasingly difficult music, you may have to use the wrist a bit.

use your arm to stum…strumming with your wrist can cause injuries….i put a site there but if u do a search you can find a lot more

  12. Chuck P says:

If strumming up and down it’s the arm, if your strumming down it’s the wrist. If it’s finger picking it’s the thumb, or fingers.

Your wrist. Watch this video of Al Di Meola explaining it in the very beginning. The guy is a serious legend in jazz fusion and otherwise.

go to youtube and search “right hand guitar technique”

  15. RedRaider says:

You use your arm for strumming, you use your wrist for piking(guitar solos things like that). but if you like using your wrist go ahead.

  16. brian777999 says:

Both of course. I cannot believe that anybody is saying “just the arm” or “just the wrist”.

Watch yourself as you strum, or watch any guitarist on youtube ; both the lower arm and the wrist must move.

The only exception to this is in flamenco guitar. The thumb is anchored on the bass E string so the arm cannot move ; all the movement must come from the wrist and fingers.

But for all other forms of music it is arm and wrist combined.

PS You should do whatever works for you if you are playing pop and rock music. There is no correct way to strum a guitar like there is a correct way to bow the violin or cello.

Wrist movement mainly unless your strummning in which case, the arm is involved.
Wrist movement is combined with the thumb pushing the pick on the down-stroke and upward on the up-stroke.

The pick movement should show a tiny circular motion when done correctly. .
