How long should i play acoustic guitar before switching to electric? ( read details )?

O.k , so i originally wanted to play an electric guitar ( Joe Satriani, Metallica are my influences ), but many people recommended to me that i start with an acoustic to build up my finger strength, learn how to produce a clean sound and other stuff.
