Strumming Patterns on the Guitar–explanations, exercises, tips?

I am learning the guitar and so far I have been finger picking a lot so I want to focus a bit on strumming. I know chords but when it comes to playing a song, I’m lost. I can’t seem to grasp the strumming pattern. Can someone explain or provide some exercises I can practice on so that I can play chords more efficiently? How do you usually know how to strum?
