I’m getting my first guitar, and I’m confused. Is there some kind of way of figuring out what strings you need to strum to play a guitar chord? Or do you just need to memorize the strumming as well as the fingering?

Whenever I stand up and play guitar, when I strum (with a pick) my strumming hand’s (right) index finger keeps hitting the bottom E string, and it hurts. Is there any way to stop this? Am I doing something wrong? I like playing rock/punk music, so I have my guitar quite low.
